Administrators’ Message

We are so proud of our amazing students and the things they are accomplishing. Below you’ll see successes in sports, a middle school spelling competition, seniors recognized as Addison Independent Students of the Week for their outstanding work and contributions over their 3+ years of high school, and participation in important events like “Getting to the Y’ that will impact our prevention efforts. Coming soon, we will celebrate our new inductees for the National Honor Society, enjoy another awesome musical, hear band and chorus concerts, and continue to learn about the impressive work our students are doing at the career center, out at Walden, or in our classrooms at VUHS. None of this would be possible without the adults working behind the scenes to make these opportunities available to our students, whether it’s parent or community volunteers or our teachers and staff who dedicate their time and energy to expanding student horizons and building skills that will insure student success beyond high school.

Thank you to our students for your hard work and stretching yourselves to learn and grow. Thank you to our teachers and support staff for the countless hours you spend providing the best education for our students. Thank you to our parents and other volunteers for your support of all we do at VUHS. And thank you to everyone for your positive contributions to our school community.

We hope to see many of you around during conferences. We will be available to chat and answer questions. Feel free to set up a specific time, stop by our offices, or catch us in the hall.

Stephanie, Ed, and Jay

Addison Independent Students of the Week

Every other week a well-deserving VUHS senior is selected as an Addison Independent Student of the Week. These students are actively involved in the community and working hard to make the most of their education. Be sure to check out the Monday edition of the paper each week to learn more about these outstanding seniors. And congratulations to our first three 2019-2020 students of the week...Marlie Hunt, Addie Brooks, and Ben Curtis.

Getting to the Y

Thank you to Robin Andrus, Elsa Michaels, Autumn Eriksen, and Megan Mentzer for representing VUHS at the middle school ‘Getting to the Y’ workshop last week. They took time to examine our middle school Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) data and will bring their work back to the VUHS community. Thank you to Xander DeBlois and Pearl Sutton who helped facilitate the workshop for all the schools in attendance and Lynne Rapoport and Suzanne Monzel who supported the work our group did.

Middle School Spelling Team

The VUHS 7/8 Spellers came in 3rd place on October 26 at Orwell Village School.

They had some stiff competition and some very difficult bonus words. They spelled their hearts out and truly showed what a team is truly made of. Even though they all did wonderful, our true MVS (most valuable speller), getting all his regular and bonus words correct, was Robin Andrus. Thank you to the Commodore Parent Teacher Group for the amazing T-shirts. And thank you to Sara Driscoll and Libby Payeur for coaching the team.

Girls’ Soccer

Congratulations to the girls’ soccer team who has now won two playoff games. They defeated Bellows Falls last Tuesday (2-0) and Windsor on Saturday (6-1). They are slated to host a semi-final game this coming Wednesday at 3:00 pm against Leland & Gray. Good luck girls!

Boys’ Soccer

Congratulations to the boys’ soccer team who defeated Randolph this past Wednesday (11-0) in the first round of the playoffs. In the quarterfinals on Friday, the boys made a valiant effort, but came up short with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Green Mountain Union High School. Congratulations to the boys on a great season!

On Saturday, October 19th, the Varsity Boys’ Cross Country team participated in the NVAC Championship Meet. The boys were 8th out of 15 teams and finished in first place in the small schools division. Ben Huston finished 9th overall, which was the best finish among all local male runners, and placed him as the top runner in the small schools division. The rest of the scoring team consisted of Gabe Praamsma, Erich Reitz, Chris Therrien, and Julio Quiles, all of whom had personal best times.

On Saturday, October 26th, the boys went to Thetford Academy for the Vermont State Championship Meet. Led by Ben Huston, the team of Gabe Praamsma, Erich Reitz, Chris Therrien and Luke Bergmans earned 6th place as a team in Division 2. Ben was able to reel in a 6th place individual finish with Gabe and Erich in 13th and 18th respectively. Chris and Luke rounded out the scoring with 39th and 57th place finishes. All of the runners posted personal bests on the difficult Thetford course, which is an accomplishment in itself. Congratulations to the boys on a successful season!

The Vergennes Rowers headed this weekend to Hull, MA to defend their title in the Head of the Weir Rowing Competition. The VUHS team consisting of Alex Rice (coxswain), Zeke Clark, Aidan Gardner, Jackson Hameline, Mitch Clark, Mike Davis and Robert Verburg swept away all of the other teams by posting a best time of 51 minutes and Twelve seconds which was more than four minutes ahead of the second place team.

A strong finish by the Vergennes team consisting of Sam Michaels, Una Fonte, Clarinda McAllister, Kaitlyn Little, Jasmine Little, Louis Provencher and Stella Armstrong helped the team earn a sixth place finish.

While the third team entry for VUHS consisting of Claire Austin, Emily Brinkman, Addie Brooks, Olivia Brooks, Dakota Loven, Ryan Baringer and Noah Letendre posted their personal best of 1 hour and 10 minutes in the same race, finishing in seventh place.

The next race is the Otter Creek Challenge November 2nd in Vergennes. Stop by and cheer on the rowers. Start time is 10 am.
