This week is Red Ribbon Week, which is designed to encourage students to focus on making healthy choices and avoid consuming drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or other harmful substances. In morning meetings, students will be asked to consider a different quote or saying each day and how it relates to making healthy choices. Vaping is a significant issue and is dramatically increasing among young people. We encourage everyone to read this article about teen vaping from the Child Mind Institute. Additionally, students in grades 9-12 will be asked to take a brief (5 minutes), anonymous survey to help inform some work that a group of UVM medical students are doing in this area. Here is a link to a document with additional information and the questions asked on the survey.
Thank you to our students for making positive, healthy choices and educating yourselves about the dangers of harmful substances. And thank you to the adults in our school and broader community for supporting our students in making positive, healthy choices.

On Wednesday, October 30th, the girls’ soccer team hosted Leland & Grey in the state semifinals, the first semifinal at Vergennes since 2006. The girls got on the board early as Emily Rooney scored in the 7th minute on an assist from Hannah Kelly. Maya Praamsma doubled the lead late in the 1st half on an assist from Ali Croke. The defense did their job holding the lead, with goalie Kate Gosliga making some big-time saves, only allowing a goal with five minutes remaining, to seal the 2-1 victory, sending Vergennes back to the state championship game for the 2nd consecutive year.
The state championship was held Saturday at the Maxfield Sport Complex in White River in front of a large and spirited crowd. The opponent, Thetford Academy, came in riding a 12 game win streak. The rematch of last year's championship didn’t start the way the girls would have liked as they fell behind by 3 goals in the first 25 minutes of the game. The girls were not about to give up and barreled back to get on the board and make it a 3-1 game on a goal from Sydney Weber early in the 2nd half. However, Thetford would not be denied their third consecutive state championship and ultimately prevailed.
The loss in the title game should not overshadow the accomplishments of the team. The girls consistently competed against much larger schools and earned the #2 seed in the state tournament finishing the season with an 11-5-1 record. Congratulations Girls!
The Vergennes community should be proud of this group and the girls thank everyone for all their support over the season and especially during their postseason run to the championship.
The 7th grade IMPACT class chose various organizations they were interested in and wanted to learn more about. While doing this research, they designed projects to benefit each organization. Three groups decided to host an activity night on Friday, November 8th and donate the proceeds to their organizations (4Ocean, Wounded Warrior Project, Breast Cancer Foundation). They will inform the other middle school students about the organizations during the activity night. If you would like to make a donation, you can send or drop off a check (made out to ANWSD) in the main office. Please write IMPACT class in the memo line.
A fourth group met with the Vergennes City Manager and designed a project to help clean up a park in the city.
A fifth group is holding a drive to gather needed items for Homeward Bound, our county’s humane society for animals. See this document for needed items.
See this flyer to donate clothing and coats as well as details about attending both events.

Interested in skiing or snowboarding on five Thursday evenings this winter (December 12 & 19, January 9, 16, 23)? The cost is on the registration form and depends on what you need. Everyone has to pay for the transportation fee. If you haven’t skied or snowboarded previously, there are lessons and rentals available. Leasing gear for the season is a great option. There are a few scholarships available if paying for this opportunity is preventing you from participating. You can pick up registration and/or rental forms in the school counseling office or print them by going to these links (Registration - Rental - Lease Package Info). Please contact Jay with any questions by emailing him at [email protected].
