If you’ve seen the last few editions of the Addison Independent, you may have noticed a full page from United Way of Addison County focusing on having conversations with young people about underage drinking. When we look at the results of the 2017 Vermont Parent Survey we gain insight into this opportunity to engage and inform parents: 81.5% of parents in Addison County think it is “not very likely” or “not at all likely” that their child has used alcohol in the past 12 months, 81.6% for marijuana. Unfortunately, parent perception of youth use doesn't match what youth are reporting. It likely would surprise parents to learn that 68% of 12th graders reported to have ever drank alcohol and 22% reported to have binge drank in the last 30 days (according to the 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey).
United Way of Addison County is promoting the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) free application ‘Talk. They Hear You’. See more information here. The app features an interactive simulation that helps parents/guardians learn the do's and don'ts of talking to kids about underage drinking. Using avatars, parents/guardians will:
Practice bringing up the topic of alcohol
Learn the questions to ask
Get ideas for keeping the conversation going
Consider having some conversations with your teen over the break. Students, talk with your trusted adults about your thoughts and concerns related to alcohol and drug use. It takes a whole community to keep everyone, especially our young people, safe. Thank you to everyone for taking the time to talk.
This is a reminder that each year, the Addison Northwest School District administers social-emotional screening assessments to all students in grades 4-10. The purpose of this screening tool is to ensure all students are receiving the social-emotional and behavioral support they need in order to be successful. This assessment is a short survey that students will complete about themselves. It will be administered at VUHS during the week of January 27, 2020.
In the event your student indicates that they are struggling and/or would like help in a particular social-emotional skill area, parents/guardians will be contacted by the school psychologist in your student’s school. If you would like more information about the survey and what it assesses, please contact your school principal.
We hope everyone has a wonderful break and we look forward to more awesomeness at VUHS in 2020.
