This is a unique and challenging time. New developments are occurring every day and adjustments have to be made to how we all operate from day-to-day. Many of you are probably monitoring news media and other information sources like the Department of Health or Center for Disease Control. This guide was developed by the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) and the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). The content is more focused on younger children, but may still be helpful for all parents, to talk about the COVID-19 virus and basic hygiene habits.

Access to Internet Service at Reduced Prices
Knowing that there is a strong possibility that we will have a period of time that we are not able to be learning in the VUHS building, we want to support families and students to make sure they have internet access to allow them to continue learning while we are not in school. Below are some low cost programs to help families obtain internet access or reduce the cost of current internet service.
Internet Essentials from Comcast - This program offers internet at $9.95 per month (although right now they are offering two months free given the current COVID-19 pandemic) for qualifying households. Unfortunately, Comcast is not available in all parts of ANWSD.
Lifeline Program - This is a federal benefit that lowers the monthly cost of phone or internet service. Click here for a recertification form that allows one person in a household to apply for Lifelines for either phone or internet service, but not both.

This trip has been cancelled; we are hoping to offer this again early next school year.
Spring College Fair for Juniors
The Spring College Fair at Champlain Valley Union High School scheduled for Monday, April 6 has been cancelled. They plan to offer it again in spring 2021. We will be sure to advertise the college fair that happens at St. Michael’s College in fall 2020.
There are scholarships available for application at this time. Scholarships are posted on the School Counseling web page here and updated on a regular basis.

On Saturday March 7th, the VUHS National Honor Society hosted Date Night Babysitting. In lieu of charging families for the NHS students watching their children, the NHS asked for food or monetary donations for the Vergennes Food Shelf. The night was a complete success! The kids had a great time and the students raised $252 and donated about 5 bags of food. Thanks to all the NHS students who helped out that night!
The VUHS Environmental Club is hosting the first ever Addison County Clothing Swap on March 21st. This event is the result of a collaboration between the Vergennes, Middlebury, and Mount Abe Environmental Clubs, and will take place at Mount Abe High School from 10-2. If you have any clothes that you no longer need, please drop them off in the VUHS main lobby anytime before the swap. We accept all different styles of clothes, and are putting an emphasis on prom attire. For more information, please watch this informational video. Thank you for donating! We hope to see you there!
The Commodore Parent Teacher Group (CPTG) is planning another great year of supporting academic and enrichment activities and community engagement at VUHS. The Commodore Friends of Music is looking for people to join our group. We are a 501c3 non-profit run by family and friends to help support our students in music. We need help in a variety of ways. Our next meeting is March 17 at 6:30 in the band room. Meetings are not usually too long. This late March/early April class has been cancelled, but may be offered before summer. We’ll advertise it here when details can be confirmed.
We'd like to thank everyone who has volunteered in the past and are planning to volunteer in the future. There’s so much that wouldn’t be possible without you. With that said, we have to make sure we are keeping everyone safe and complying with the law in regards to background checks. Any event hosted at the school that involves non-school personnel interacting with students will require that all volunteers be background checked at some level, depending on the level of access to students. Examples of this would be middle school activity nights, selling concessions, and high school dances. Most events will require at least Level 2, but a Level 3 certification with fingerprinting is necessary if there is any possibility of being the only adult with a group of students.
For a background check, you need to complete an online application and fill out paperwork with Dianne Marcotte. Dianne will contact you after you have completed the online portion to set up a time to meet. You will need to have your license and a check for $11.25.
