The French and Indian War

Vermont played a big part in the French and Indian War. Vergennes was one of the major shipping depots for furs, iron ore, lumber, and supplies. The reason was because it was easy to get to lake Champlain from otter creek. I'm not saying the st. Lawrence seaway wasn't a good route to travel but it had quite a few strong currents. The French and the British both wanted control of what is now called Crown Point. They wanted control of Crown Point so that they could control the waterways and determine who gets in and out.

The Algonquin and Iroquoi Indians of the New England region were fighting against each other and the French and British helped make the war more brutal. The war between the Indians was going on for many years before the French and British showed up. The British introduced many more tactics to the Indians such as scalping. Most of the Indians sided with the French because the French married into the tribes, they also treated the Indians nicely, and they only wanted the furs instead of all of the Indians land. I'm not saying that all the Indians sided with the French but the majority of them did. The Iroquoi Indians sided with the British.Toward the end of the French and Indian War some of the Indians traded sides.
