Calvin Coolidge was born on July Fourth, 1872 in Plymouth Notch, Vermont. His father was John Calvin Coolidge who was born in 1845 and died in 1926. His mother's name was Victoria Josephine Moor Coolidge who was born in 1846 and died in 1885. Coolidges mother died when he was twelve years old. He also had a sister who died of Intestinal Ailment. Calvin Coolidge was of an English descent. His family and him were Congregationalists. In Calvin Coolidges boyhood, he attended Plymouth District school, went to Black River Academy which is a high school, graduated in 1890. Went to St. Johnsbury Academy which is also a high school, and to Amherst College. In college, Calvin Coolidge showed great interest in political campaigns. During the first two years of college he earned fair grades. There he received a Bachelor of arts degree from Amherst college in 1895. Calvin Coolidge also studied law. He also practiced law in Northampton Massachusetts. Calvin Coolidge was just an average student in school. He did not mix very well with the other students in the school. In his senior year, he was selected as class speaker. In 1905, Calvin Coolidge Married Grace Anna Goodhue who was born in 1879 and later died in 1957. She was a teacher at the Clark school for the deaf in Northampton. Grace was happy, talkative and fun loving. They were married on October 4, 1905. Calvin Coolidge and Grace Anna Goodhue had two boys. Their names are John and Calvin. Calvin Coolidge Jr died of blood poisoning on July 7th, 1924. John Coolidge is still alive. Calvin Coolidge became president at Warren Harding's death on August 2, 1923. He was sworn in by his father at 2:47am in his home in Vermont. He was elected as the 30th president in 1924. Charles Dawes served as Coolidge's vice president. I found that Calvin Coolidge was the only president born on the 4th of July, but there is one other that came from Vermont. Cal was a Republican. In 1924 he ordered an investigation on the Teapot Dome Oil Lease. The Teapot Dome Oil Lease was the USA's emergency oil, but Albert Fall was selling it. This was called the "Teapot Dome Scandal". Coolidge reduced income and corporate taxes and retired a big part of the national debt. It was thought that all this was partly responsible for the Great Depression. Coolidge's nickname was "Silent Cal." It was once said by Walter Lippmann," This active inactivity suits the mood and certain of the needs of the country admirably. It suits all business interest which want to be let alone.. And it suits all those who have been convinced that the government has become dangerously complicated and top heavy...." In other words Cal doesn't fix things that don't need fixing. Cal retired in 1929 to Northampton Massachusettes. After his term as president he wrote numerous newspaper and magazine articles. He also wrote an autobiography. Not often was it that Calvin took an active role in politics. Cal was found dead in his room in Northampton, Massachusetts on January 5, 1933. He was 61 and died of a blood clot. Calvin Coolidge was buried near his birth place in Plymouth Notch, Vermont in a family plot. Before he died he had said to an old friend,"....I feel I no longer fit in with these times." |
