"The Vergennes Methodist circuit was formed in 1798, ten years after the formation of the city of Vergennes, and was served by traveling preacher Joseph Mitchel. Before the construction of a church, the congregation worshiped in the homes of members, in the schoolhouse, or under trees on the green with an ox cart for a pulpit. The present church was built and dedicated in January 1841. The structure has basically remained the same since then, except for a change to increase seating." (from the Burlington Free Press, February 1, 1997). I have attended this Church since I was born. I was baptized in this church and passed confirmation in this church. I know everyone there, and everyone there knows me. We have a very devoted pastor, pastor Jim Bowen is his name. He is a great man and has a lot of knowledge about our religion. Our church has a great amount of love and respect for the community in which we serve. Every day at 4:30 P.M. the church carillon sings out it's hymns of praise and love. The music can be heard all over Vergennes. Every one in our church is always willing to give up their time to volunteer for things that might help improve the community or someone who's hurt or alone. Every Christmas our church sells very good quality Christmas trees, at a sensible price, too! The second Saturday of every month at 5:30 P.M.. People come from as far away as Burlington and Colchester to enjoy the church dinners that are prepared by members and served to the public. The church has a youth group which I am part of . We do many fun things. Like mystery dinners, caroling at Christmas time, roller skating, skiing and seeing movies in theaters. The leader of the youth group, Marie Kayhart is a sweet (gosh I hope she reads this) person who works closely with pastor Jim to keep us happy. The church is home to about 100 worshipers of all ages. The doors are always to others though. The services are every Sunday 10:30 to 11:30 am. The founder of our religion was John Wesley, a very great man who would be very proud of his work. John Wesley saw himself standing in the stream of Christian spirituality and doctrine and claimed, "The old religion, the religion of the bible ,the religion...... of the whole church in the purest of ages." We believe in doing no harm, avoiding evil especially. Doing good of every possible sort to all people by attending upon all the ordinance of God. We also believe in the forgiveness of sin and hatred. |
