Geographical and
Astronomical Data Collection During the Vermont Trip.
During this trip you will collect data at each location about its
geography as well as astronomical observations both quantitative
and qualitative. Select an appropriate location in your trip journal
for the following data you will collect daily by using a handheld GPS
receiver and in the case of observable planets for the date of your
visit, internet resources. Note the date and time for each data
collection point. Save
each data location as a "point of interest" or similar function
designation on the GPS receiver you use. Create a data table and a
graphic organizer to plot your data in a way that correlates your daily
readings in a meaningful way.
Geographical
- Latitude and longitude
- Elevation
- Observations of surficial features such as bodies
of water and landforms.

There are a number of quality handheld GPS receivers
available at a reasonable cost from Magellan
Garmin
and other
suppliers or you can share one with others on the trip.

By using topographic
maps of the areas we will visit
you are to plot our daily route and the locations we visit. You can
access a printable geologic map
of the region for our observations of geologic features. The website of
the Vermont
Geological Survey contains a wealth of information about the
locations we will visit as well as many that we will not have time to
explore.
