In venues across the state, the Commodores excelled in sports, writing, mathematics and oratorical contests. VUHS Senior Emily Martin was honored by the Seth Warner-Rhoda Farrand Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for her state winning essay comparing the lives and impacts of Charles Lindbergh and Christopher Columbus. Her essay will now be sent to nationals. Emily is also the winner of the Veterans of Foreign Wars ‘Voice of Democracy’ local contest as well as the locals of the Rotary International Speech Contest.
The DAR also honored 8th grader Kai Williams for his winning essay on the American Colonies reaction to the Stamp Act. Kai was awarded a medal, certificate and cash prize.
Junior Alyse Beauchemin earned her second state championship in two weeks. Alyse represented VUHS at the local and then state level of both the American Legion Oratorical Championship and the Lions Club Speak Out. She was awarded the state title in both events and will represent VUHS at the national American Legion contest in Indianapolis, Indiana over April break. This will be Alyse’s second trip to nationals as she won the state title last year as well. In preparation for nationals, Alyse has made different presentations to the VUHS School Board, a former State’s Attorney, a local attorney who was a past Oratorical champion, and a local civic organization. Any group interested in hearing Alyse’s speeches (4) to help her prepare for nationals, please contact Cookie Step at (802) 877-2938.
