Community Based Performance Assessment of Student Research
As part of the VUHS team-taught Humanities curriculum students are required to complete a 10 page personal research essay and round table discussion with adult community members. VUHS teachers and students will share their views on this process, what they gained by participating in this task, and how to implement a similar program. Topics addressed will include use of learning contracts, the 3S curriculum model (Self-Subject-Society), and how to incorporate key texts. We will also practice developing essential humanities questions related to student research interests. As VUHS moves towards a performance based curriculum, requiring proficiency in real world tasks, this assessment focuses on student reflection and ownership, research skills, thesis formation, and presentation skills in an authentic context.
