2010 James Wakefield
The Vergennes Rowing team participated in there first event for the 2010-2011 season and what a start it was for the team. Braving high winds with gusts of up to 25 MPH the team of Chelsea Ross at coxswain, Jarrett Clark at stroke oar, Max Campono, Dale Eriksen, Alex Hulfish, Cody Hutchins, Joe Krayewsky, and Rachel Clark took second place in the day’s first event, beating 5 other teams. For their second race of the day, this group once again, showing their strength and determination and knowing they had to make up 15 seconds from the first heat race, this group rowed like seasoned veterans. They challenged for the lead several times before passing the team from Vinylhaven. Executing a picture perfect turn which catapulted the group into the lead they held on winning this race. Rowing their hearts out, they finished 12 seconds head of the second place team. The combined times for both races gave Vinylhaven a 3 second victory over Vergennes who finishing second. The second team of Jesse Bunde, Joe, Cody, Anthony Wood, Josh Cook, Jade Houston and Emily Weber finished the same event in fourth place for the day.
The VUMS team of Brandon Lane, Nick Beamish, Kyle Dow, John Tatlock, Bailey Dieterle, and Emily Delgadio (9th) finished the day in 9th place overall. This is fantastic for two reasons. The first being, all but for one rower this was there first time ever rowing in a race and secondly, they are the only MS team to compete. All competitors are high school aged.
