Rowing Team History

The Rowing Club has been in existence at Vergennes Union High School since the spring of 1999. As a class project, Lee Shorey and Dennis West in partnership with Lake Champlain Maritime Museum built a 32-foot long boat. From this project, Dennis West started the Vergennes Rowing Club. Over the next four years, Vergennes, Middlebury, and St. Albans high school students built four more long boats.

The rowing team is open to all middle school as well as high school students. The rowing team has varied in size from 14 to 22 students over the past five seasons. Rowing is a two- season sport. The fall season begins in September and ends in early December, when we participate in the season ending race “The Icebreaker” in Boston. Boats are then taken out of the water and put away for the winter. During the off season, January and February, the boats are stripped and repainted by the VUHS Rowing Club to get them ready for the next season which begins in March, with the first race back in Boston. The spring season then continues from March until the end of school.

VUHS has supported the Rowing Club over the years by providing transportation for practices and for the races. The principal in the past has made available funds for entry fees. This year we hope the Vergennes Rowing Club will be considered an established club and be supported by the school’s Athletic Department. In the past the club has been lead by a teacher volunteer and financially supported by its teams members.
