Solar Energy in Vermont
By Nick Richer

Text Box: “You can save energy dollars and help protect our environment at the same time” – VSEGText Box: “Every year, the energy equivalent of over 5 million kilowatt-hours of solar energy falls on each acre of land.” – Vermont Solar Energy GuideSolar energy can help heat our homes and provide us with electricity!  Using solar power is a new way to use sunlight to power different objects and create jobs. The Vermont Solar Energy Guide remarked that “In the past ten years, thousands of Vermonters have installed solar systems ranging from simple sunspaces to advanced solar electric systems that provide reliable, clean energy.”  That clean energy is a new way of looking at how we as Vermonters use and produce our energy, instead of using fossil fuels which are common in today’s society.  Another plus to having clean renewable energy is that it is cost effective.  Vermont Solar Energy Guide agreed with this statement by stating “By investing in a solar system, you can save energy dollars and help protect our environment at the same time.”  In the fall of 2010 there was a solar farm that was finished and went online in Ferrisburgh Vermont.  Mr. Pomerleau states that “solar energy harvested by the Ferrisburgh Solar Farm goes out onto the grid and is distributed by a local utility company.”  These solar panels on average power 170 Vermont homes.  Having all of these homes powered by clean renewable energy is a big plus for all of the lush landscape that Vermont has to offer.   So when you are looking at your next heating bill, just think about the way you are getting that energy.

This picture shows how much energy is coming from a South-facing window, compared to a solar collector at 45 degrees.  BTU (British Thermal Units) is a unit of measurement of thermal energy.

What Makes Vermont a Unique Experience?
By Nick Paquin

Why is Vermont so unique? Is it the extremely lenient hand gun laws? Or possibly is it our fine cheese and maple syrup products? Truth is there are many reasons that make Vermont a unique state. The fall foliage is breathtaking; the residents are extremely nice and welcoming as compared to the stubborn New England states surrounding it. Also, you never know what kind of wonderful weather you are going to get.

Saying that Vermont is different is an extreme understatement. It is different than most other places in almost every aspect and category imaginable. In Vermont itself there are very diverse cultures, ideas, beliefs, and more dangerous; weather patterns. Vermont has to be one of the states with the widest range of temperatures in one day. On a summer day it can reach up to 100 degrees but once the sun falls it could easily drop to 35 degrees. A famous comedian Jeff Foxworthy once explained it as, “You know you live in Vermont if you have to use the air conditioning and the heat in the same day.”

Vermont’s diversity shows also in its religion mainly with all the different branches of Christianity, but the intriguing fact that 22% of the state doesn’t believe in a religion at all. Also Vermont has many different ethnic and language backgrounds, including French (French Canadian), English, Irish, Polish, Swedish, Dutch, Russian, and many more. Although Vermont has the second highest amount of Caucasian people among the 50 states, its number of different races is steadily increasing.

Spending time in Vermont can be such an easy thing for a person to do. Whether you are a resident or a tourist, finding something to do, or that you enjoy is so easy. If you are visiting Vermont there are a few things you must do and see. You need to get some of our own Vermont Maple Syrup. This stuff is the best and it is made from the richest and most pure ingredients while using the traditional sugaring process. Also the cheese and other dairy products made by Cabot in Vermont are phenomenal. They are made using milk from hundreds of home owned farms that work so hard to help make such a wonderful product.
If you’re an outdoorsy person there are lots of winter activities such as snowboarding and skiing in Vermont. We have almost 20 different mountains and resorts and some are even the largest in New England. Also hunting and fishing are great things to do in Vermont. We have one of the larger lakes up in this region: Lake Champlain. There are also lots of other lakes, rivers, and public property to hunt and fish on. Not to mention Vermont has the most lenient gun laws anywhere in the United States. You could buy a gun and walk out of the store in a matter of minutes.

All in all, Vermont is unique for uncountable reasons. Whether it’s strolling through the back roads looking breathlessly at the one of a kind fall foliage, or interacting with the nicest people you’ll ever meet, no matter where you are in Vermont your needs will be satisfied. The people are so kind and friendly and generous, and the possibilities for fun or anything really are endless.
